Road Safety For Children

It’s no secret that children are among the most vulnerable road users. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every day in the United States, an average of nine children are killed and more than 800 are injured in traffic crashes. That’s why it’s so important for parents to teach their children about road safety and make sure they’re always using proper safety gear when they’re outside. If you must walk on the road, keep to the side and watch for traffic. As a general rule, children under the age of 10 should not be allowed to cross the street alone.

Here are some tips for keeping your children safe on the roads:

1. Teach them about traffic signs and signals. Help them understand what each one means and how to interpret it.

2. Emphasize the importance of stopping at all stop signs and red lights.

3. Explain that crossing the street should only be done at designated crosswalks or intersections.

4. Instruct them to always look both ways before crossing the street.

5. Tell them to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

6. Make sure they’re wearing bright, reflective clothing when walking or biking near traffic.

7. Teach them to never text or use electronic devices while crossing the street.

8. If they’re old enough, stress the importance of always wearing a seatbelt while riding in a car.

By following these tips, you can help keep your children safe on the roads and prevent serious injuries or fatalities.
